Alternative Measures for Relieving Headaches; Headaches Do Not Have to be a Pain

20 January 2010 0

HeadahceThere are many ways to treat headaches other than with medication. Other therapeutic techniques can be learned and used to relieve pain.
Relief from the pain and discomfort of a headache is a quest for everyone at some point in their lives. Over the counter (OTC) analgesics glut the shelves of pharmacies and grocery stores, all promising a quick and long-lasting respite from this malady. If you are afflicted with headache pain, but want to try something other than non-prescription pain relievers, here are seven effective measures that bring relief quickly.
Check your Hat Size -

A hat, cap, bandana, helmet, eyeglasses, and sunglasses can all cause headaches if they are too snug. This is especially true if you have been exercising or have been out in the heat; your head swells, but your gear does not.  If you get a headache and are wearing paraphernalia on your head, take it off.
Chill -

Placing an ice pack on the back of the neck is another proven remedy. In lieu of an ice pack, put some ice in a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel.
Drink an Iced Caffeinated Beverage -

Some headaches result from blood vessels in the head dilating. Both caffeine and ice constrict these vessels and allow blood flow to return to its normal balance. If you consume caffeine on a daily basis, your headache may be because you have not had your normal daily amount, and drinking a beverage will provide you with your normal dosage. By the way, caffeine is the secret ingredient in “extra-strength” pain relievers – check the label.
Get Touched -

When a headache hits, try a do-it-yourself massage (if you are lucky, you can set somebody to give you one).  You can try two things:
“    First, there is an acupressure point in the webbing between your thumb and index finger. Applying pressure to this spot will do wonders or,
“    Second, using both hands, apply gentle pressure on each side of the back of your neck.
Hydrate -

Drinking water will help relieve your headache if your headache is the result of dehydration. You do not have to be exercising to lose fluids, either. If you do not drink water on a regular basis, you are susceptible to dehydration. Coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks do not count because these are diuretics and remove water from your body.
Loosen Up -

Relieve tension headaches by employing relaxation techniques. Try yoga or meditation for effective stress relief. And that clenched jaw? Relax and take a few deep breaths.
Make Scents of it All -

Try simple aromatherapy. Oils of peppermint and eucalyptus are excellent treatments for headaches rooted in stress and tension. Daub a little on the back of your neck and temples, and breathe a sigh of relief.

These are just a few of many headache relief techniques proven effective over the years. If using commercial, non-prescription pain medication is something you are trying to stop, try one or all of these. However, if your headaches persist, or any bodily pain for that matter, consult with a licensed health care professional for a thorough examination and diagnosis. From this, you will better equipped to help yourself.
