Nutritional Cures For Back Pain

11 March 2010 0

If you suffer from back pain for any reason, there are vitamins and mineral supplements that you can take to help alleviate it. You should always consult your healthcare professional, of course, especially if you take other medications or have other diseases or conditions that could be affected. But I’ll give you some general guidelines of supplements you can take to help yourself feel better-and do more than just cover up the pain, actually help your body to heal.

The Most Important Nutrients -

We’ll start with the nutrients that are the most important to your back health and being pain-free. The most obvious, and on the top of the list, is calcium, which is needed for strong bones. For optimal absorption, you want to use a mixture of three different forms, calcium carbonate, calcium chelate, and calcium asporotate. You should take 1,500-2,000 milligrams daily.

Magnesium works in conjunction with calcium. It should be taken in magnesium chelate form, 700-1,000 milligrams daily. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium and magnesium; the recommendation is 400 IU daily.

DL-phenylalanine is a natural amino acid that helps alleviate pain. It should be taken daily every other week. It should not be taken if you are pregnant or nursing or suffer from panic attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure, or PKU.

A multivitamin and mineral complex with vitamin A is essential-it supplies the nutrients necessary for the formation and metabolism of bone and connective tissue; your body also requires these nutrients to heal. You need 15,000 IU of the multivitamin complex daily, unless you’re pregnant, in which case you shouldn’t exceed 10,000. You should also take 15,000 IU of natural beta carotene and 400-800 IU of vitamin E.

Silica or horsetail, taken three times daily, provides your body with silicon, which helps with calcium uptake. Vitamin B12, 2,000 mcg daily or injections as prescribed by a doctor, also helps with calcium absorption and digestion. A lozenge or sublingual form is best.

50 milligrams of zinc daily-not to exceed 100 milligrams from all supplements-will assist your body with protein synthesis and collagen formation and promote a healthy immune system. Copper-3 milligrams daily-works in conjunction with zinc and vitamin C to form elastin and is necessary for healthy nerves.

The Second-Most Important Nutrients -

Three milligrams daily of boron also improve calcium uptake, but you want to be sure and take it only until you’re healed unless you are over the age of 50. Chondroitin sulfate, bovine cartilage, shark cartilage, and glucosamine sulfate, all taken as directed on their labels, are important components in many body tissues, including bones and connective tissue.

A free-form amino acid complex, taken as directed on the label, is essential for bone and tissue repair. L-proline, 500 milligrams daily on an empty stomach with water or juice (no milk!), heals cartilage and strengthens muscles and tissues. It should be taken with 50 milligrams of vitamin B6 and 100 milligrams of vitamin C for better absorption.

That’s Not Even All! -

There are more, but these will get you started on the road to feeling better. Happy healing!
