The Causes Of Back Pain

9 March 2010 0

Back pain affects nearly 80 percent of all adults. It’s the most common cause of hospitalization. Acute pain occurs suddenly and is usually caused by misuse of the body. Chronic or recurrent pain can happen as the result of nearly any movement and often for no discernible reason. Problems in the muscles, tendons, bones, ligaments, or organs such as the kidneys can manifest themselves in the form of back pain.

Disk Degeneration -

Disk degeneration is a common cause of back pain. Our disks tend to degenerate naturally as we age; nearly all adults over forty will have some degree of disk degeneration. When degeneration gets bad enough, something as small as a sneeze can cause it to rupture or herniate, which causes the soft inner tissue to protrude and press against the spinal cord-which hurts quite a bit, as I understand.

Muscle Strain -

Muscle strain is another leading cause of back pain. This type of back pain usually comes on suddenly and can be very acute, but like so many health problems that we don’t notice until they become symptomatic – it actually develops over a period of time.

Lactic and pyruvic acids are produced when muscles contract as byproducts of muscle activity. When high levels of these acids accumulate, they cause irritation that eventually becomes pain and interferes with the normal functioning of electrical impulses in the muscle tissue. This condition is call delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.

Fibrositis -

Fibrositis is soreness of the neck, trunk, and shoulders due to inflammation of connective tissue. Most often, this condition affects older people, more likely as a result of stress, tension, allergies, or fibromyalgia rather than injury.

Pregnancy -

Pregnant women frequently experience back pain, due to stretching of the abdominal muscles and the resultant shortening and tightening of the back muscles. Also, the spine has more weight to support, which can change posture.

Psychological and Other Components -

The majority of cases of back pain have significant psychological components, deep-seated emotional or stress-related problems. Poor posture, poor choices of footwear and bad walking habits, incorrect lifting techniques, straining, calcium deficiency, and too-soft mattresses can all make your back hurt. Bladder, kidney, and prostrate problems, female pelvic disorders, and constipation can cause back pain. Chronic conditions linked to back pain include arthritis, rheumatism, bone disease, and scoliosis. Fractures are hardly ever the cause.

Making the Pain Stop -

A lot of the time it’s hard to pinpoint or diagnose a particular cause, and especially when the pain goes on for years and is sometimes quite debilitating, the frustration with this lack of answers or solutions can be intense. I know-I’ve experienced it. What finally helped me was chiropractic care, physical therapy, and the adoption of a healthier lifestyle and a more nutritional diet.

Chiropractic treatments can even reduce disk degeneration, thus preventing further pain down the road. Pregnant women can see chiropractors. No matter the cause of your pain, chiropractic in conjunction with physical therapy in conjunction with nutrition can only make it better. So if you’re a sufferer of back pain, don’t despair; there is help available out there.
