Weight Loss: Journaling For Accountability And Faster Success

4 March 2010 0

Successful, permanent weight loss requires you to make some significant lifestyle changes. Yes, I know, it sounds hard, but it’s true. Unfortunately, gaining weight is super easy to do. Weight loss is going to take some work. And, if you don’t want all of that hard work to go down the drain, you’ll have to make some kind of commitment to a permanent lifestyle change because that’s the only way to enjoy permanent weight loss.

People who keep a Weight Loss Diary Lose More Weight -

In a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, participants in a weight loss program who kept a food diary more than five days a week lost almost twice as much weight as their counterparts who did not keep a food diary. So, it turns out that keeping a weight loss journal can be a powerful tool in helping you to achieve more weight loss, because keeping a journal makes you really focus on how much you are eating and what you are eating.

You Need Accountability to Stick to Your Plan -

But everyone knows that change can be difficult. That’s why you need some form of accountability when you have decided to make a major change such as weight loss. There may be a part of you that would much rather stay lazy and sit on the couch with your feet up eating bon bons and wearing stretchy pants. When you go through the cabinets throwing away the foods that no longer fit in with your weight loss goals, it’s that part of your personality that will try to talk you out of tossing the whole bag of cookies.

Start your Weight Loss Journal -

Go get a notebook and start your weight loss journal now. Later you can go out and buy a special notebook, but for now all you need is a pen and a piece of paper. You want to record what you eat at each meal, the quantity and what your mood was before you ate. If you are weighing in weekly, include your weight once a week in your journal so that you can see your progress, or lack thereof, every time you fill in a meal.

A weight loss journal will only work if you can be utterly and completely honest with yourself. If you sat down to eat your meal and then went back for a second helping, write it down. Make the commitment to yourself that you are going to be honest and completely transparent in this journal. Remember, you can’t change what you don’t measure. After a few weeks of keeping your journal and watching the numbers on the scale you will know how you need to adjust your eating habits to get you closer to your weight loss goals.

Online Resources for Weight Loss Journals -

A quick search on the Internet will return many websites that offer free online food diaries or weight loss journals. A website called thedailyplate.com provides a free profile where you can track your meals, your exercise times, get access to a free calorie calculator, and get access to a forum where you can chat with others who are trying to lose weight.
