How are Sciatica and Back Pain Linked?

Sciatica and Back Pain.jpg

Sciatica is a Symptom of Numerous Medical Conditions. 13% of the 40 million low back pain cases also have sciatica, equaling over 5,000,000 cases of sciatica a year along with low back pain. Sciatica refers to pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in the leg to due to compression of the nerve which runs down the back of the leg from the lower segments of the spine. As few as 15% of sciatica suffers are diagnosed with disc-related problems indicating other causes of the symptoms.
In 17% of the assumed normal population the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle rather than under it (this is known as piriformis syndrome) which can compress the nerve, mimicking sciatica.
